Breakfast in bed--cooked and served by a singing Carly Simon--was the big attraction at a celebrity auction Monday on Martha’s Vineyard.

After $8,500 was bid for her breakfast-in-bed specialty, Simon stepped to the microphone at the Harborside Inn in Edgartown to ask who the winner was. “She wanted to see the man who was bidding $8,500 for her song, and a woman in the back held up her infant son,” said Judy McCarthy, who helped organize the auction.

Columnist Art Buchwald was the host for the auction, which brought in $63,000 to benefit health and social services to island residents. Other bids included $5,600 for a sailboat ride with Walter Cronkite, $2,000 for a tour of CBS’ “60 Minutes” show with Mike Wallace, $1,600 for a visit to the set of “Sesame Street,” $1,200 for an original by Jules Feiffer cartoon, $1,200 for lunch with Buchwald, $1,000 for a tour of The Washington Post with Chairwoman Katharine Graham and $700 for a drink with Christopher Reeve and a ticket to his new play, “Death Takes a Holiday.”
