Some of a crowd of more than 20,000 demonstrators protesting rises in food prices were briefly detained today after they scuffled with police outside Parliament, police said.

The marchers were organized by the Congress Party of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

Police and commandos armed with machine pistols and automatic rifles guarded the Parliament complex as members inside began a debate on inflation.

But outside, the Gandhi supporters shouted slogans calling for the resignation of Prime Minister V. P. Singh.
