THE SIDELINES : Singleton’s Eligibility Extended

The NCAA has granted leukemia-stricken University of Arizona linebacker Kevin Singleton a sixth year of eligibility, the Tucson Citizen said in today’s editions.

Thirteen months ago, Singleton’s condition was diagnosed as acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Since the original diagnosis, Singleton’s condition has gone into remission. He received a bone marrow transplant from his twin brother, Chris, in January.

The Citizen didn’t identify its sources but said it has learned that in order to play this fall for the Wildcats, Singleton first must pass a team-mandated physical Sunday and then must pass a second physical administered by his physician, Dr. William Dalton.

Since the transplant, Singleton has regained most of his strength. He has been working out this summer five days a week, running, lifting weights and jumping rope.

The Singleton twins each took a redshirt year in 1985 as academic freshmen. Chris Singleton completed his eligibility last year.
