SmithKline Beecham: The Anglo-American health and household products company reported that its second-quarter profit was $303 million, 47% higher than the same quarter of 1989. The London-based company said the good performance was highlighted by continued sales growth, strong operating profit and significant debt reduction. Sales were up 3% to $2.1 billion. The results are the second set reported on a quarterly basis since Beecham PLC and SmithKline Beckman Corp. merged in July, 1989. Year-earlier figures are presented as if the merger had been in place in the second quarter of 1989.
