A 6-month-old baby who was kidnaped from his La Puente home last week was found unharmed behind a Long Beach restaurant--with a baby bottle by his side and a thick blanket wrapped around him, sheriff’s deputies reported Friday.

The baby was abducted Aug. 2, sheriff’s deputies said, by two men who entered his parents’ San Gabriel Valley home and pushed a baby-sitter to the ground. They were demanding a ransom of $350,000, which was not paid.

The boy was discovered late Thursday night, asleep, next to trash cans behind the Star of Siam Restaurant on Anaheim Street.

“I thought he was a doll because he was not moving at all,” said restaurant owner Thaworn Nuklib-Anderson, who found the boy. She said she feared that the child had been injured or might be dead because he appeared so pale.

But the infant awoke after paramedics arrived, she said. Her husband, Robert Anderson, who is co-owner of the restaurant, said, “He was looking around. He was even giggling a little with the paramedics.”

Nuklib-Anderson said the baby was wearing a clean diaper, socks and a top. She said she believes the baby had been outside only a few minutes because she found him shortly after hearing a car door close behind the restaurant. “That’s when I went out to investigate,” she said.

About the same time the restaurant owners were calling 911, the father of the baby received a call from one of the kidnapers, who told him where he could find his son, according to Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies. The baby’s father, in turn, called the Sheriff’s Department.

Sgt. Gunars Heine, who is investigating the kidnaping, said the call was the department’s first contact with family members, who had not reported the kidnaping.

“They’re scared to death,” Heine said.

The kidnapers had called the family several times in the last week but never completed any arrangement for dropping off a ransom, according to Deputy Hal Grant.

The baby’s father, who owns a market in the Los Angeles area, communicated with the kidnapers in Spanish, Heine said.

Sheriff’s deputies, who declined to name the family, are seeking the public’s help for information.

They are looking for two Latino men. One is 5-foot-8, has a dark complexion and weighs about 140 pounds. The other is 5-foot-6, has a light complexion and weighs about 150 pounds. They were seen driving a 1987 or ’88 light blue “GM-type car” with a brown passenger door.
