Pop and country singer Kenny Rogers brings his special crossover blend of the Nashville sound to Norwalk Saturday, where he will perform at 8 p.m. at the Cerritos College stadium, 11110 Alondra Blvd. The concert featuring the white-bearded country crooner will be presented by Cerritos College and the Bellflower Chamber of Commerce.

Chamber staff members said they have been working more than a year to set up a concert headlining Rogers, who has been a regular on the Top 40 charts for the past decade.

Rogers is pictured above during a concert in 1988 at the Celebrity Theatre in Anaheim.

A portion of the Cerritos concert proceeds will benefit the 1990 Cerebral Palsy Spastic Children’s Foundation, the Cerritos YMCA, Little House, Su Casa, Pools for the Handicapped and the Associated Students of Cerritos College fund for improvements to the stadium track.

Tickets are $20 and $25 for stadium seating, $35 and $50 for assigned seating and are on sale at Cerritos College Community Services (860-2451) and through the Bellflower Chamber of Commerce (867-1744).

“It’s yuppified boxing,” says Steve Brooks, head of West Coast Pro Sports, which is presenting “Boxing by the Beach” at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Grand Ballroom of the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Long Beach.

“We cater to local businessmen, the coat-and-tie crowd,” Brooks said. “They come for drinks, to see the ring girls and to see two guys brawling.”

Wednesday’s five-bout card will be headed by Esias Zumudio, the North American Boxing Federation world flyweight champion, who will face an opponent as yet unnamed.

Tickets are $20 for general admission, $40 for VIP seats and $75 for ringside. They can be purchased at 4136 Anaheim St., Long Beach. For more information, call 494-4886.
