Soviet Envoy Back in Egypt After 9 Years

CAIRO —
Soviet diplomat expelled for alleged meddling in Egypt’s internal affairs has returned to Cairo nine years later to take up his old post of ambassador.
Vladimir Polyakov, director of the Middle East and North African department at the Soviet Foreign Ministry, was expelled in 1981 by then-President Anwar Sadat who accused him of inciting strife in Egypt.
