NATION IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : VA Paid Benefits to Deceased Veterans

The Department of Veterans Affairs has paid benefits to more than 1,200 deceased veterans, including about 100 dead a decade or more, the General Accounting Office said. The agency pegs the potential annual loss at $5.7 million. The congressional agency said the department could have reduced the erroneous payments by matching VA files with Social Security Administration death information. The department said it intends to follow that procedure.
