Mobil Disbands Political Panel

Share

A political committee funded by the Mobil Oil Corp. has formally disbanded more than five months after it helped defeat an effort to ban hydrofluoric acid at Mobil’s Torrance refinery.

Papers filed with the Torrance city clerk last Friday declare that the committee has been terminated.

Mobil contributed $710,038.78 to the committee, or all but $200 of its receipts, according to amended figures in the report. But $26,097 of that money was refunded to Mobil because it was not used, leaving the corporation’s total donation at $683,941.76, the report states.

The Mobil Oil Corp. Refinery Safety Committee/No on Measure A was created to fight a March 6 Torrance ballot measure that would have forced Mobil to stop using hydrofluoric acid, a highly toxic chemical. The measure lost by a 3-1 margin.

The group supporting the measure, Citizens for Yes on Measure A, spent $62,265.86. It was terminated in papers filed last month.
