Public Meeting About Landfill Site

Share

State health officials are holding a public meeting in Carson tonight to discuss their plans to test for hazardous-waste contamination at a former Cal Compact landfill site bordering the San Diego Freeway.

The results of the testing are expected to play a major part in determining whether the 157-acre tract, used as a dump in the 1960s, will be bought and developed for commercial use.

The property is among the assets at stake in bankruptcy proceedings involving its owner, Orange County businessman Robert A. Ferrante. An investment group hoping to build a shopping center on the site has agreed to buy the land for $47 million if--among other conditions--it does not cost more than $25 million to clean it up.

Tonight’s meeting is scheduled to start at 7 at the Carson Community Center, 3 Civic Plaza, Room 107.
