President Bush’s uncle, Dr. John Walker, died early Thursday morning of complications from an aneurysm. He died at Southern Maine Medical Center about 10 miles from Bush’s summer home.

A White House spokeswoman said Walker, 81, the brother of Bush’s 89-year-old mother, died about 20 minutes before the President arrived in a final attempt to see him.

Walker was a retired surgeon and investment banker who switched careers from medicine to finance after being stricken with polio in 1950.
