Pope John Paul II on Saturday appointed the Vatican’s first envoy to Romania in 40 years.

Father John Bukovsky was named apostolic nuncio in Bucharest, a move made possible after diplomatic relations were re-established between the Holy See and Romania three months ago.

The Pope elevated Bukovsky, 66, to the rank of archbishop.
