Eli Lilly Plans Major Expansion: The company said it will spend $540 million on the expansion that will add 1,000 people to its Indianapolis work force. Most of the new jobs would be high-paying positions in research and development. The project involves adding several buildings and major roadwork to Lilly’s industrial center, where 3,000 people are employed. Lilly said the total would rise to 3,500 by 1994 and to 4,000 by 2000. Another $235 million will be spent on additional projects and site improvements during the next four years.
