SIMI VALLEY : Council Gives 5 Sites Landmark Status
The City Council voted Monday to designate five sites, including Simi Valley Elementary School, as historical landmarks.
Simi Valley Elementary, the oldest school in the city, was built in 1926. The Spanish-style building has since been renovated and other classrooms added, school district officials said.
The council also voted to give landmark status to a giant coast live oak tree, located west of Peppertree Lane and south of the Arroyo Simi. The tree, believed to be about 1,000 years old, measures 9 feet across.
Other landmarks include a similar size sycamore tree, considered several hundred years old, on Wood Ranch Parkway near Martha Morrison Road; a row of 144 77-year-old California fan palms on Alamo Street, between Tapo Canyon Road and Sycamore Drive; and a two-story farmhouse built in 1929 in the 2000 block of Royal Avenue.
However, landmark status does not mean a site will be preserved.
