A California businessman has struck a tentative deal to buy the Tacoma Tigers baseball team, with the stipulation the team stay in Tacoma at least five years, a Tigers official said.

George Foster, chairman of the Livingston, Calif.-based Foster Farms poultry company, plans to inspect Cheney Stadium and Tacoma on Thursday, Tigers Executive Vice President and General Manager Stan Naccarato said.

The deal should be closed in January, according to a statement issued Monday by the Oakland Athletics Triple-A farm team. The purchase price was not disclosed.
