CHEYENNE, Wyo. — The rancher daughter of an ex-governor won the GOP nomination for her father’s old job and will square off in November against Democratic Gov. Mike Sullivan, who coasted to victory against a motorcycle mechanic.
In other primary races Tuesday, Republican Sen. Alan K. Simpson handily won nomination for a third term.
Rancher Mary Mead defeated 12-year state Rep. Nyla Murphy. Her father, Cliff Hansen, served as governor from 1963 to 1967 before moving on to the U.S. Senate.
Sullivan easily won nomination for a second term, receiving 88% of the vote against mechanic Ron (Suds) Clingman. Clingman had called for lowering the drinking age to 18 and decriminalizing drugs.
Simpson, the Senate minority whip, was nominated with 84% of the vote and will meet little-known Democrat Kathy Helling, a 32-year-old college student.
