U.S. OKs Mainframe Sale to Soviets: The Commerce Department granted Control Data Corp. an export license to ship the most powerful computers ever sent to the Soviet Union from the West, the company said. The six mainframe computers, worth a total of $32 million, will be used to analyze safety factors in the operation of civilian Soviet nuclear power reactors. The company applied for the export license last November and announced the Soviet order a month later.
