Long Beach : School Board Increases Fees for Camp Hi Hill Students
The cost of attending the popular Hi Hill Outdoor School, a tradition for all sixth-graders in the Long Beach Unified School District, is about to double for some students.
The school board Monday approved increasing the fees for the weeklong educational camp near Mt. Wilson in the San Gabriel Mountains.
Board members doubled the regular $24 rate to $48 per student, but they adopted smaller fee increases for students from low-income families. Students who until now have paid $18 would pay $25, and those who have paid $19.40 would pay $30.
Officials said the fee hikes are necessary to offset increases in the cost of transportation and food.
District officials had suggested higher increases for low-income students attending Camp Hi Hill, but several board members objected. Instead, the board modified the district proposal, lowering the proposed increases for low-income students by doubling the regular rates.
