A 66-year-old San Ysidro man was killed, and his 89-year-old passenger was injured Tuesday when their car was broadsided by a U.S. Border Patrol van as they pulled out of a private driveway in the 3500 block of Beyer Boulevard.
The driver, Ramon Garcia, died of massive head injuries at UC San Diego Medical Center at 9 p.m., a few hours after the accident, said police spokesman Bill Robinson.
His passenger, Dolores Ortiz of San Ysidro, was listed in good condition Wednesday at UCSD, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Police said the van, driven by Agent Ernest Rogers, 30, was northbound on Beyer when it struck the car and rolled three times.
Ramon did not have the right of way, said Traffic Investigations Sgt. Michael Healey.
Border Patrol officials said the agent suffered a damaged tendon in his hand and a few bruised ribs. He was discharged Wednesday from Chula Vista Community Hospital, a hospital spokeswoman said.
