Metropolitan Asks Workers to Quit--or Else: Metropolitan Property & Casualty Insurance Co., trying to persuade 80% of its work force to leave, has warned workers that if they don’t accept a severance offer, they could face involuntary layoffs later. The firm, an affiliate of Metropolitan Life Insurance Co., wants 475 of 600 Warwick, R.I., workers to leave. Clerical and salaried workers are being offered from 12 to 65 weeks’ pay, depending on seniority.
