Former USC linebacker Junior Seau, the San Diego Chargers’ first-round pick and the fifth overall selection in the NFL draft, has agreed to the team’s final contract proposal, Charger General Manager Bobby Beathard said Thursday.

Beathard said Seau’s agent, Steve Feldman, wasn’t sure when Seau will be able to report to the Chargers’ training camp at UC San Diego.

Seau has missed 34 days of training camp.

Beathard set a deadline of 5 p.m. Thursday for Seau to accept a five-year, $900,000-a-year contract. Beathard and Feldman had a meeting Thursday morning at which Feldman asked Beathard to reconsider the offer, but Beathard told him it would not be increased.

According to Beathard, Feldman said he thought Seau could get more money if he sat out the season and went through the draft again next year. But after a conversation with Seau, Feldman called Beathard just after 5 p.m. and agreed.

Neither Feldman nor Seau could be reached for comment.
