Layoffs at Data General: The struggling Boston computer-maker, which has already slashed its payroll by a third, announced the layoff of more than 2,000 additional workers in an attempt to end a string of losses. Some analysts doubted whether the measures will work. The company said the latest layoffs and accompanying severance payments would result in a charge of about $70 million in the fourth quarter ending Sept. 29, and that a quarterly loss is likely.
