CALIFORNIA IN BRIEF : SACRAMENTO : Lobbyist’s Gift to Legislator Alleged

A San Jose assemblyman has been charged with unlawfully accepting free house-painting services from a lobbyist interested in a bill he was carrying. Assemblyman Democrat Dominic L. Cortese, 57, was charged with the misdemeanor violation of the state Political Reform Act, which prohibits elected officials from receiving gifts arranged by lobbyists. Arraignment is scheduled Sept. 4 in Municipal Court. The maximum penalty is six months in jail and a $10,000 fine.
