A’s Dave Henderson Might Be Out for Season Because of Knee Injury
The Oakland Athletics have become so accustomed to injuries, they take them in stride.
Shortly before Friday night’s game at Detroit, the leaders of the American League West learned that center fielder Dave Henderson would have to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left knee and would probably be sidelined for the rest of the season.
Undaunted, the Athletics rallied to beat the Tigers, 6-4, and remain five games ahead of the Chicago White Sox.
A bases-loaded double by Carney Lansford broke a 2-2 tie and triggered a four-run rally that enabled Scott Sanderson to improve to 13-8.
Dennis Eckersley pitched two scoreless innings to earn his 39th save in 40 opportunities.
Henderson was injured in Chicago Monday night when he slipped on wet turf while trying to make a sliding catch.
Henderson was hitting .272 with 19 home runs and 59 runs batted in.
