Ways to End Hunger Now

Share

Here are recommendations not found in the University of California Hunger Recommendations (Aug. 11): Have governments plant orange and other fruit trees in back yards of rental or owned houses. Orange, apple and other citrus trees require virtually no upkeep other than watering.

Encourage young and old to plant vegetable and fruit gardens in their own back yards or in community garden plots. Here, the growing season is practically year-round, and a great amount of food can be grown in a small area. In our back yard, for example, we have orange, apple, grapefruit trees, grapes, blackberries, tomatoes and cantaloupes, all requiring a minimum of care. Furthermore, home-grown food would lessen the incidence of food-stamp fraud and abuse as well--documented in a Times Page 1 column (Dec. 30, 1989).
