Ernie Irvan took the lead on lap...
Ernie Irvan took the lead on lap 410 and held off Rusty Wallace by a car length for his first career Winston Cup victory in the Busch 500 at Bristol International Raceway in Bristol, Tenn.
Irvan went in front when Dale Earnhardt tried to get past a lapped car.
Irvan led the rest of the way to win $49,600 in the Morgan-McClure Racing Team’s Chevrolet.
Wallace continually tried to get past Irvan in the final laps, but held on to finished second. Winston Cups points leader Mark Martin was third; Terry Labonte was fourth; and Sterling Marlin finished fifth.
Irvan averaged 91.782 m.p.h. on Bristol’s steep, .533-mile oval in the only night race on the Winston Cup circuit.
