WORLD : Aquino Rejects Rebel Demands
President Corazon Aquino today rejected as an “insult” demands by rebel soldiers for her resignation.
Aquino’s statement came hours after suspected military dissidents exploded a bomb at a car sales office once owned by the president’s late brother-in-law, Ricardo Lopa.
The predawn blast at Mantrade in the capital’s financial district of Makati shattered glass windows and damaged two cars but caused no injuries.
The right-wing Revolutionary Alliance for the Masses-Soldiers of the Filipino People in a statement today called on Aquino to step aside and begin a “democratic dialogue” on the future of the nation.
“These threats and demands of rebels and traitors are an insult to our people and democratic institutions and deserve only the condemnation of our freedom-loving citizens,” said Aquino, who has crushed six coup attempts.
