The city has received a $50,000 grant from the state Department of Conservation buy containers for residents to use in a curbside recycling program.
The city plans to issue 14- to 16-gallon, single-compartment bins to encourage residents to participate and discourage scavenging, said Tami Knutson, the city’s solid waste recycling coordinator.
The state received 105 proposals for container funding in 1990, and Lakewood was one of 40 cities to receive a grant. California law requires all cities to reduce solid waste by 25% by 1995 and 50% by 2000.
