Picnic to Be Held for Handicapped

Share

About 35 handicapped children will feast on hot dogs and hamburgers, and take a few whacks at a pinata today during a picnic sponsored for them by the firefighters’ union.

Federal Firefighters of San Diego Local 33 sponsors the annual picnic and pays for it with contributions it collects, said picnic organizer John Walls.

The invitation-only picnic at Bonita Cove gives youngsters, who are picked from San Diego centers for the handicapped, a chance to spend a day in the park.

Many of the children suffer from diseases such as cerebral palsy, spina bifida and muscular dystrophy, Walls said.

“It’s an opportunity to get them out and enjoy,” he said.

Ice cream sundaes, a magic show, games and a chance to get a close look at firefighting equipment is also on the agenda.

“It’s a fun day for the firefighters too,” Walls said.

Federal firefighters work at installations around San Diego.
