World IN BRIEF : ETHIOPIA : Drought, Famine Threaten Thousands

Hundreds of thousands of people in eastern Ethiopia face famine conditions as a spreading drought enters its second year, according to Yilma Kassaye, head of the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission. The drought has wiped out crops in the eastern highlands and threatens the lives of livestock in the country’s arid southeast, he said, adding that the attention of international aid groups has been focused on the drought threatening an estimated 4.5 million people in northern Ethiopia.
