Beaux, a San Diego police dog, sent a robbery suspect to the hospital when the 17-year-old youth refused to surrender to police officers early Monday.

The incident started when a Yellow Cab driver was called to pick up a fare in the 1600 block of Canyon Road in Spring Valley. When the driver arrived, he was met by the youth pointing a .22-caliber handgun at him.

The young robber took $160 from the cabbie and drove off in his taxi, a San Diego police spokesman said. About 5 minutes after the robbery, police spotted the cab going north on Interstate 805 near Market Street and gave chase. The robber crashed the taxi into a parked car in the Bayview Heights area and ran into an apartment building in the 5400 block of Bayview Drive where police flushed him out with the aid of Beaux.

The suspect was hospitalized with multiple bites to his left arm, left leg and the side of his head, police said. A police spokesman said the suspect would be taken to Juvenile Hall when he is released from the San Diego General Hospital.

Police recovered the cabbie’s money and the handgun used by the suspect.
