Howard (Navy) Liebernecht, a retired airplane mechanic and resident of Burbank for 50 years, has died. He was 84.

Liebernecht died Thursday in Burbank of pneumonia, said his son Jon Liebernecht.

A native of Phelps, N.Y., Liebernecht served six years as a signalman in the U.S. Navy during the early 1920s, which earned him the nickname of “Navy.” In 1927, he went to work as an airplane mechanic for a firm that later became Trans World Airlines Inc., which brought him to the Los Angeles area in 1940. He retired from the company in 1952 and worked as an auto body mechanic. He also worked at KMPC-AM from 1967 to 1979, installing radio equipment.

He is survived by his son, Jon Liebernecht of Van Nuys; a daughter, Linda Liebernecht of Simi Valley; a sister, Ruth Sommers of Bridgeport, Tex., and a granddaughter.
