Pico Rivera : Councilman Chavez to Head League of California Cities

Share

City Councilman John Chavez will be installed as president of the county chapter of the League of California Cities tonight in Pico Rivera. The Los Angeles Division is the largest in the state with 86 member cities.

Chavez was selected by a nominating committee in June, after serving this past year as the division’s first vice president. In the organization, the current vice president usually becomes next year’s president, serving for one year, said Lomita Councilman Hal Croyts, the outgoing president.

The league, founded in 1898, meets regularly to discuss local, regional and statewide issues. Although the league has no legislative authority, it will approve resolutions and lobby on their behalf at state and local levels. The division will be considering Pico Rivera’s resolution urging the Legislature to ban the sale of spray paint to minors and restrict the display of spray paint in order to prevent shoplifting. Gang members use spray paint to create graffiti, which cost cities millions of dollars every year to remove.
