THE SIDELINES : U.S. Soccer Star Paul Caligiuri Signs With East German Club

Paul Caligiuri, whose goal put the United States in the World Cup soccer finals, today become the sixth member of the American squad to sign with a European club, the U.S. Soccer Federation announced.

Caligiuri, a 26-year-old midfielder from Diamond Bar, signed a 10-month contract for $50,000 with Hansa Rostock of the East German first division, the USSF said.

Caligiuri scored the goal against Trinidad and Tobago in November that earned the U.S. team a berth in Italy, where he also found the net in a 5-1 loss to Czechoslovakia.

Another U.S. midfielder, Tab Ramos, is playing with Figueres of the Spanish second division, defender John Doyle and midfielder Hugo Perez are with Oergryte in Sweden, and forward Chris Sullivan is with Landskrona Bois in Sweden.

The biggest impact so far has been made by defender Steve Trittschuh, who has scored two goals in as many games with Czechoslovak champion Sparta Prague.

In addition, goalkeeper Tony Meola is trying out with Brighton of the English second division, and midfielder John Harkes is talking to clubs in Britain.
