Big Mac Fever Hits Chinese Job-Seekers
Thousands of Chinese have flooded a McDonald’s office in southern China where the American fast-food giant is hiring employees for its first restaurant in this communist nation, a company official said today.
McDonald’s plans to open a 500-seat restaurant in the economic boom town of Shenzhen, near Hong Kong, on Oct. 8.
Two Shenzhen newspaper ads this week drew more than 6,000 applicants for 240 part-time jobs, an official at the Shenzhen McDonald’s said. Some applicants hold university degrees, he added.
“It was pretty chaotic when the huge number of people raided our . . . office. We’re now busy deciding who to pick,” he said.
The newspaper ads, displaying the traditional McDonald’s striped shirts with matching caps, read: “More than 200 youths in Shenzhen are going to put on this uniform, a symbol of a prosperous future. As an aggressive person, what are you waiting for?”
The new recruits must work 12 hours a week, the ads said. Wages were not revealed.
