2 Filipinos Get Prison, Fines for Arms Smuggling
Two Filipinos who pleaded guilty to helping smuggle ammunition and hundreds of guns to their homeland were sentenced in Los Angeles to small fines and prison terms.
U.S. District Judge A. Wallace Tashima sentenced Maria Louisa Tan Hang this week to nine months in prison, the last two in a community corrections center, and $5,050 in fines.
Her husband, Kerwin Hang, was sentenced to the time he already has served in prison, about six months, and was fined $1,025.
The Hangs were indicted with two other Filipinos in February after authorities seized 371 pistols and 500,000 rounds of ammunition headed for the Philippines.
All four were charged with five counts of weapons violations and one count of customs violations in connection with the gun-smuggling ring, said U.S. Atty. Carol Gillam.
The two other defendants are to be sentenced on Oct. 1.
