Cost of the Gulf Crisis to RTD Put at $5 Million

The Persian Gulf crisis will cost the Rapid Transit District about $5 million in added fuel costs for its 2,695-bus fleet unless the price of diesel fuel drops before the end of the fiscal year, a report released Thursday concluded.

The report to the RTD Board of Directors by General Manager Alan Pegg recommends that the agency ask the Los Angeles County Transportation Commission to consider covering the cost increase by tapping into a $13-million fund set aside for service expansion.

“The only other source of funding that the district can directly access is fare revenue,” Pegg said. “An increase of 5 cents for the basic adult cash fare (currently $1.10), together with an increase of $2 in the basic monthly pass (currently $42), would generate approximately $9 million a year.”
