Teachers in Compton to Vote Monday on Pact
A tentative agreement between teachers and the Compton Unified School District calls for starting salaries to go from $23,226 to $26,000 a year, district and union officials said Friday.
Instead of just across-the-board raises, the union successfully fought for a comprehensive revision of the salary schedule for its approximately 1,300 teachers. The revision is aimed at keeping experienced teachers in Compton.
Those at the top of the salary scale would earn about $48,000, up from $39,999. Terms of the pact are expected to be ratified Monday by union members.
Compton teachers have been among the lowest-paid in Los Angeles County, and hundreds over the last two years have taken jobs in other districts.
