A Catholic man was shot dead as he slept in his bed Friday in what appeared to be a sectarian killing.

Police said gunmen burst into the man’s house, shot him several times in the head and fled. The victim, in his 30s and not immediately identified, had no connection with security forces.

A woman, a youth and two children in the house were unharmed.

Police said the man may have been killed by Protestant paramilitary extremists.

On Wednesday the outlawed Ulster Freedom Fighters threatened to kill Catholic workers after the Irish Republican Army shot and wounded two workers at a construction firm which it accused of doing repair work for British security forces.
