Brian Watkins, stabbed to death in a New York subway station last week while defending his mother from muggers, was buried Saturday and remembered as a caring person who loved helping others.

The 22-year-old, a tennis buff, had gone to New York with his family to watch the U.S. Open tennis tournament.

The victim and his brother, Todd Watkins, 25, jumped to their mother’s defense when a gang of young muggers hit her in the face in a midtown Manhattan subway station. One youth stabbed Brian in the chest, and he collapsed while chasing the muggers. His brother was not injured.

“At a seminar Brian attended once in New York, a man came walking up to him and said he needed food, that he hadn’t eaten in days,” Todd Watkins said. “Brian, without even thinking, took the man into a Dunkin’ Donuts shop and bought him a dozen doughnuts. It may have not been the most nutritious meal ever, but it certainly was from the heart.”

Todd, who delivered the eulogy for his brother, sobbed as he said: “I love you, buddy.”

Eight youths have been indicted by a state grand jury in New York on charges stemming from the killing.
