UCSD Winds Up Third in Water Polo Tournament

Host UC San Diego split its two matches Sunday to finish third at the Triton Water Polo Invitational at Caynonview Pool. Following an 8-7 loss to Air Force, the Tritons defeated Claremont Mudd, 17-3, to finish 2-2 in the round-robin tournament.

Navy won the championship with a 4-0 record, followed by Air Force (3-1). UC Davis (1-3) and Claremont Mudd (0-4) were fourth and fifth.

In UCSD’s victory over Claremont Mudd, sophomore Kevin Vance scored five goals. Sophomore Scott Rasmussen, a USDHS graduate, and freshman Andy Steinheimer each added three.

SURFING

Kelly Slater of Cocoa Beach, Fla., scored a perfect 50 on one of his five waves to win in the finals of the $100,000 Body Glove surfing event at Lower Trestles of Camp Pendleton.

Slater, 18, surfing in only his seventh competition as a professional, won every heat but one and collected $30,600.

Before turning professional two months ago, Slater was a four-time U.S. amateur champion and winner of the 1989 Op Junior competition.

Chris Brown of Santa Barbara, who beat Slater in the quarterfinals, placed second in the finals. Charlie Kuhn of Indian Harbor, Fla., and Bud Llamas of Huntington Beach finished third and fourth.

Mike Stewart, formerly of Anaheim and now living in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, won the bodyboarding division. Stewart, a two-time world champion, collected $5,000 for his victory. Kyle Maligro of Kalaheo, Hawaii, Ben Severson of Wahiawa, Hawaii, and Chris Tennberg of Kalaheo, Hawaii finished second, third and fourth.
