‘Resistance to Gay Cops’

Share

Marshal Alan Phillips’ column (“Resistance to Gay Cops Defeats the Police Mission,” Commentary, Sept. 1) only addresses this issue from one perspective.

Social change can be legislated, but enacting such legislation does not automatically mean widespread and immediate acceptance among the populace or smaller groups. It is unreasonable to expect any body of people to instantly change feelings and attitudes developed over a lifetime. The Los Angeles Police Department is a fraternity of men and women that has bravely served the city of Los Angeles for decades, in spite of the fact that it covers a larger area with fewer officers per thousand of population than probably any other major city in the country.

Former Sgt. Mitchell Grobeson may have legitimate complaints, but departmental review boards and the civilian police commission are the forum for their review. Trying to hold the department, its administrators, the city administration and the taxpayers hostage only serves to divide and polarize the population.
