SAN JOSE : Talks on Salvador
The next round of Salvadoran peace talks is scheduled to begin Thursday in the Costa Rican capital, but the outlook for progress is dim, and a previously agreed Sept. 15 deadline for a cease-fire in the country’s civil war appears out of reach.
The focus of the United Nations-sponsored talks remains on the sensitive problem of negotiating a reduction in the size of the government’s security forces and a restructuring of its military command.
Thursday’s session will mark the fourth round of talks since last winter, and it is scheduled to last until Sept. 17. U.N. officials say that even if nothing is achieved this time and the cease-fire deadline passes, they still expect talks to continue.
