Bellflower : Trash Hauler Asks Council to Increase Collection Fees
Soaring landfill fees have forced the Bellflower City Council to consider raising its residential trash collection fee by 82 cents a month and commercial fee by 10%, city officials said. The fee for single-family homes, for example, will increase from $7.48 to $8.30.
Cal-San Inc., the Downey sanitation company that hauls the city’s trash, has asked the council to increase trash collection fees because landfill operators raised dumping fees in July. The council will vote on the increase at its Sept. 24 meeting.
If Bellflower approves the increase, it will join a handful of Southeast area cities that have upped trash collection fees to combat the increasing costs of landfill dumping, and to meet the requirements of a recently passed state law that mandates each city reduce by half the amount of garbage going to landfills.
