A reputed gang member was convicted Thursday of murdering a 2-year-old boy when he tossed two Molotov cocktails into the home of his former girlfriend in South Los Angeles.

Anthony Snead, 20, was found guilty by a Superior Court jury of first-degree murder with two special circumstances--murder by arson and murder by a destructive device--that qualify him for a death sentence. The penalty phase of his trial is to begin Sept. 24. A co-defendant, Sekou Thompson, also 20, has been convicted of first-degree murder in the case and was sentenced to life in prison without parole. Defendant Leonard Nixon, 26, is awaiting trial.

Prosecutors said Thompson drove Snead and Nixon, all suspected gang members, to the home of Snead’s former girlfriend on July 4, 1988. Snead and Nixon allegedly threw two Molotov cocktails into the home, starting a fire that killed Dionsa Moore, the nephew of the ex-girlfriend.
