WORLD IN BRIEF : SRI LANKA : Troops Break Tamil Siege, Kill 100 Rebels

Troops backed by air cover broke a three-month siege of a 17th-Century fort in Jaffna and killed at least 100 Tamil guerrillas during the surprise attack, the military said. It said 12 soldiers also were killed in the predawn assault, which freed more than 200 police officers and soldiers who had been trapped in the fort since June 13. “Heavy resistance” by guerrillas of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam was reported, but the military gave no details.
