WORLD : Troops Engage Tamil Positions
From Times Wire Services
COLOMBO, Sri Lanka —
Government troops fought house to house with Tamil rebels today in their stronghold of Jaffna, a day after government forces stormed a colonial fort in the town to rescue a trapped garrison.
Military sources said the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam were putting up strong resistance as troops advanced to clear rebel positions around the fort.
About 1,600 troops stormed into Jaffna on Thursday and relieved the garrison that had been under rebel siege for the last three months.
