English Team Signs U.S. Goalie Meola

Tony Meola, the goalkeeper for the United States in all three of its World Cup matches this summer, has signed a one-year contract with Watford in the second division of the English Football League.

Meola, 21, became the seventh player from the U.S. World Cup team to sign with a European professional club. He is expected to start tonight for Watford’s reserve team.

Meola, of Kearny, N.J., became the national team’s starting goalkeeper in 1989, playing in the last four qualifying matches and all of the team’s World Cup matches.
