BANGKOK, Thailand — The first meeting of what was to become Cambodia’s interim government ended in disagreement today, with the warring factions arguing over how to guide the country to free elections.
Representatives of the factions accused each other of trying to destroy the Supreme National Council, formed a week ago as part of a comprehensive U.N. Security Council peace plan.
The factions in the 11-year-old civil war blamed each other for failing to agree on how the council should be chaired.
The council currently consists of six government representatives and two from each of the three allied guerrilla groups: the Khmer Rouge, the forces of former head of state Norodom Sihanouk and the Khmer People’s National Liberation Front, led by former Prime Minister Son Sann.
