Pomona : Election Districts Approved

Share

With a surprising lack of controversy, the City Council has agreed on a map that divides the city into six council districts for elections beginning next March.

The plan recommended by consultants from the Rose Institute of State and Local Government at Claremont McKenna College drew no opposition at a public hearing this week.

The plan creates two districts with Latino majorities and one with a population that is one-third black. One goal of the plan was to protect minority voting rights.

The plan, which is scheduled for final approval by the City Council in two weeks, enlarges the council to six members elected by district instead of the current four members elected citywide. The mayor will continue to be elected citywide.
